Big Win for Limavady College Team
Limavady College GAA team cruised to victory in the Ulster Bank Further Education Colleges League, beating Cavan Institute 1-15 to 1.2. The Limavady team demonstrated high levels of power, skill, teamwork and sound defence and were on top throughout the game which
ended in an impressive win. Congratulations to sport lecturers and team managers, Jim McGuinness, David McGinley and the team.
Businesses in Lisburn Finding Excellence the Stena Line Way
Lisburn Institute was pleased to welcome the Director of Onboard Services from Stena Line to the Institute this week. Stephen Bryden held a Business to Business seminar to invited delegates entitled "Excellence in Customer Service the Stena Line Way ". His presentation outlined how he and his staff have turned the level of service onboard the Stena Line around to make it more customer focused. This involved changing the structure and culture of the organisation to make it more supportive to staff and in doing so they have fully embraced the Servant Leadership Structure throughout the business. It was an excellent event which generated a great deal of positive feedback from all delegates.
North West Institute Lecturer has Golden Touch
John Crowe, a Hospitality and Catering Lecturer with North West Institute, has won gold at this years Professional Cookery and Restaurant Competition, held recently at the RDS in Dublin. The prestigious event, organised by the Panel of Chefs of Ireland, was attended by professional chefs from all over Ireland , some from the most exclusive restaurants in the country. John won his award in the Senior Irish Lamb competition, and remarkably, only entered the competition minutes before the start time. John's success is further evidence of the growing Hospitality and Catering talents and skills currently on offer at North West Institute, and the staff and students from the Institute wish John continued success.
North West Institute to Swim for Charity
Staff and students from North West Institute will take part in a charity ‘Swimathon' on Thursday 22 nd March in aid of Marie Curie Cancer Care. The events will begin at 9.00am at the Templemore Sports Complex, and before then, the organising staff will be canvassing the Institute for sponsorship support. The staff and students will form teams of five, each of whom will swim 40 lengths of the pool which is equivalent to 5 kilometres. For further information contact Kevin Clarke 028 7127 6460.
IELTS Now Available at Upper Bann Institute
Upper Bann Institute is offering an exciting opportunity to all those who do not have English as a first language through the provision of the International English Language testing System (IELTS). IELTS is a measurement of an individual's ability to communicate in English across all four language skills; listening, reading, writing and speaking. IELTS is studied by those intending to work or study where English is the predominant language of communication. It has proved to be a highly popular programme throughout Northern Ireland and this is the first time that IELTS is available through an FE college outside of Belfast.
IELTS is a necessary programme for anyone who wishes to progress in any academic profession and have credibility as an English speaker. Currently it is one of the most widely recognised way of proving that an individual's English is at a highly advanced level, ensuring the person is capable of managing a professional job or education. At Upper Bann Institute, IELTS students study on the Lurgan campus and sit the IELTS exam at Queen's University, Belfast.
CEDEFOP Success for UBI
Well done to Theresa McEntee and Rodney Hodgins from UBI who have both been successful in obtaining places on the CEDEFOP programme. Theresa McEntee, who heads up the Essential Skills provision at the Moy Park factory in Portadown on behalf of UBI, has been invited to go to Greece to look at ‘Vocational Training In the Food Sector ' from 14th to 18th May. Rodney Hodgins, lecturer at UBI's Community Learning Centre will be going to France , Portugal or Latvia and his visit will focus on ‘assessment/accreditation of non-formal
learning or extending adult/youth recruitment to vocational training.'
Open Day Success at Armagh College
Armagh College hosted a very successful Open Day and Evening recently. The College welcomed over 700 prospective students and their parents who were eager to learn about the extensive variety of courses available at the College. Staff were available throughout the day to offer advice, information and support on all courses and future career opportunities on offer to students. There were a record number of application forms completed and submitted, totally over one hundred more than in previous years.
Armagh College Students Get Top Results
Five of the first year ‘AS' Level students at Armagh College have gained four Grade ‘A's in their January ‘AS' modular exams, with many others also achieving high grades. Hilary Bradshaw from Markethill obtained straight ‘A' grades in Biology, Business Studies, Geography and Psychology; Becky Johnston from Markethill obtained straight ‘A' grades in Biology, Chemistry, Geography and Maths; Neil McCarragher from Armagh obtained straight ‘A' grades in Chemistry, IT, Maths and Physics; Rebekah Taylor from Glenanne obtained straight ‘A' grades in Biology, Geography, Maths and Psychology and Louise Wilson from Armagh obtained straight ‘A' grades in Biology, Business Studies, History and IT. Mrs Joy Smith, Head of ‘A' Levels at Armagh College , said she was delighted with the efforts of the first year ‘AS' Level students. “We are proud of the achievements of all our students. There is quite a difference in what is required for GCSE and what is required at ‘A' Level, and many students have successfully made this major transition at a very early stage in their ‘A' Level programme.”

Reading and Writing Difficulties among Adults
The Grundtvig project called ‘Forward Trainer' has resulted in a Grundtvig 3 course that will take place in Larnaka Cyprus from 24th -28th October. This course will focus mainly on raising awareness of the problems connected with reading and writing difficulties and on initial steps in spotting and helping adults who have these difficulties. This course is aimed at teachers, careers officers, tutors, trade union and employers representatives, local authorities and others who, in their professions, are likely to meet adults with reading and writing difficulties. ALFP (NI) Annual Conference
An Adult Learner Finance Project Northern Ireland (ALFPNI) conference for student finance advisers will take place from 28th -29th March at the Tullyglass Hotel, Ballymena. This conference will be of particular interest to advice workers, adult learners, Students' Union Officers, senior management in educational institutions, agencies and voluntary organisations. FSB and ANIC Future Students of Business Awards will take place on Friday 8 June in Parliament Buildings, Stormont, Belfast.
RSCni Annual Conference
RSCni's Annual Conference, on Wednesday 21st March at East Tyrone College , will address a range of issues that will assist colleges in the strategic development of e-learning. The 3 keynotes and 8 workshops will allow staff from many roles in colleges to contribute to the production of their colleges e-Learning Strategy, from developing a vision of where technology can help achieve college objectives to shared experiences of colleagues from N Ireland and UK colleges.

LSDA NI Annual Conference
This year's LSDA Annual Conference will take place on Tuesday 24 April 2007 from 9.00 am – 4.15 pm at the Galgorm Manor, Ballymena. The conference is entitled Delivering Public Value and will facilitate discussion framework to help organisations deliver a performance that accommodates client satisfaction and social outcomes. Corporate Governance and Risk Management Seminar

BBC Northern Ireland Job Opportunity for Students
BBC Northern Ireland is currently advertising to recruit
Broadcast Technology Assistants.
This role is part of a wider BBC Broadcast Technology Assistant trainee scheme and the BBC is particularly keen to hear from students from FE colleges throughout Northern Ireland who might have the right skills for this exciting opportunity. The closing date for applications is 22 April 2007.
NESTA FameLab
NESTA FameLab is an exciting national competition to find the new voices of UK science and engineering. It is looking for talented people who have the ability to share both their enthusiasm and knowledge with the public. The Northern Ireland heat will take place on 15th April at the Black Box in the Cathedral Quarter of Belfast. BBC Big Yellow Bus Timetable
The BBC Bus will be at the following locations during March 2007. The Bus will be open from 11am to 3pm unless otherwise stated.
Thursday 15th - Holywell Hospital In conjunction with the Healthy Minds campaign the Bus is heading up to Holywell Hospital to deliver workshops in Digital Photography. The visit will also coincide with an Art exhibition at the hospital.
Friday 16th - Healthy Minds event - St Patrick's Hall, Strabane. The bus will be open to all between 12pm and 4pm. Hugo Duncan will be doing a live broadcast between 1.30 and 3pm.
Tuesday 20th - Newry - Storyfinders Project. Open from 11am until 3pm.
Wednesday 21st - Healthy Minds event - North East Institute, Antrim campus. The bus will be open to all between 2pm and 6pm. Check out the healthy food demonstration and join Radio Ulster's Alan Simpson live at the event from 3 to 5pm
Thursday 22nd - School Report Day - Londonderry.
Saturday 24th - Healthy Minds event - Patrick St Campus, Newry Institute. The bus will be open to all between 9am and 1pm. Radio Ulster 's John Toal will host the popular Saturday Magazine show from the event from 10 until 11am.
Wednesday 28th - Aslan Centre, Knocknagoney. Workshops in Digital Photography. Members of the trust from all over Northern Ireland will be coming along on the day to find out how to get the best out of their digital cameras and how to manipulate their images on the computer! The bus will be open to all between 10pm and 3pm.
Friday 30th - Healthy Minds event - Holywood Town Hall. The bus will be open to all between 12pm and 4pm. Hugo Duncan will be there too, broadcasting live from the event from 1.30 – 3pm
