Wreckless Driving Awareness for East Tyrone Students

Ten students from the college attended an event held last Thursday at Dungannon Courthouse which was aimed at curbing carriageway carnage. The initiative which was organised by a number of organisations including the PSNI; Court Service; NIO; Prison Service and Youth Justice Agency gave a dramatic reconstruction of how lives are affected as a result of irresponsible driving. The students in attendance witnessed the aftermath of a car crash and what happens as a result when an individual is arrested and charged with a car crime related offence. A mock trial with a real judge also took place, followed by a talk from the ‘Prison! Me? No Way!' team who set out graphically what it is like to go to prison. As part of their presentation, the Prisons team brought along a mobile cell, which was an exact mock up of a typical cell in prison. Other activities included the chance for pupils to see a remand hearing by video link between the courthouse and Maghaberry prison. The students in attendance found the event very beneficial as they said it provided them with a good opportunity to gain an insight into the workings of the Criminal Justice System.
