North West Institute Students Raise Funds for Local Charities
Travel and Tourism students from North West Institute recently raised a total of £136.00 following a charity raffle to raise funds for Foyle Hospice. This initiative, by the Foundation Degree Year 1 Travel & Tourism / Hospitality & Tourism Management students, is only one of a number of annual activities which they undertake to raise monies for local charities each year. In December 2006, they raised £1,200 as a result of bag packing at Marks and Spencer, and they are hoping to beat last year's donation which was presented to the Hospice in June 2006 by the staff and students involved.

UBI Helps Tackle Community Safety Issues For those interested in developing safer neighbourhoods and communities in the Banbridge and Craigavon Boroughs, Upper Bann Institute has devised a new training programme that will teach the very skills required to make a difference. Exploring and answering questions about local crime, violence, anti-social behaviour, public perception and restorative justice, this City and Guilds qualification is just the ticket for those with community safety roles, interests or responsibilities. The course will cover topics such as: community safety agencies, policies and legislation; community safety audits and action plans; crime and anti-social behaviour; restorative practices and mediation; and connecting with hard to reach groups within the community - among many others. The programme will look in depth at the problems facing the boroughs of Craigavon and Banbridge, assessing how they compare with other parts of the UK and Ireland and how restorative justice and best practice can be used to help solve the problems within our own areas. There are no entry requirements onto this course which will run at UBI's Community Learning centre, Tullygally Primary school , Craigavon. It will run on Wednesday evenings and UBI is now taking enrolments for this course. For more information, interested parties are asked to contact Rodney Hodgins at the Community Learning Centre on: 028 3834 4543 or email: HodginsR@ubi.ac.uk

Castlereagh College Staff Sign up to Reading Programme
Staff at Castlereagh College has signed up to a Time to Read programme which encourages Primary School children to improve their literacy. This is a Business in the Community initiative which is monitored by Queen's University. It aims to show children that reading is an enjoyable activity and gives an opportunity for volunteers to build up the children's confidence and self esteem. These programmes have a positive impact on some 800 pupils across 136 schools in Northern Ireland and provide employers with an ideal vehicle for staff development, motivation and confidence-building. Time to Read is also an excellent vehicle to raise self esteem and motivation levels of the young people involved in the programme. It develops pupils socially and emotionally while enhancing literacy and communication skills. Many of the children involved are selected so that they will have a special ‘mentor' who will take the time to get to know them personally and be a positive role model. The staff involved meet two P5 children every week, for half an hour each over three years

Embedding and Integrating Literacy, Language and Numeracy (LLN) within Vocational Programmes
There is increasing recognition that addressing the LLN needs of learners within vocational programmes can provide learners with the confidence, competence and motivation necessary for them to succeed. Recent research from the NRDC has clearly demonstrated the benefits of embedding or integrating, highlighting the strong correlations between embedded features of provision and higher retention and achievement rates. Although many providers are keen to develop embedded courses, they are concerned about the best ways of going about this and about having the resources to do it well. This conference takes place on Thursday 8 March at the Abbey Community Centre, London and will clarify the issues around embedding and will draw together information about the latest research. There will be opportunities to hear about and explore practical approaches to embedding in a range of vocational areas and the challenges and opportunities that embedding presents. Conference Fee is £70. Enquiries to Gurjit Kaur on 0116 204 2833, email: gurjit.kaur@niace.org.uk
