North East Institute
The North East Institute is celebrating after sweeping the boards by winning three major awards. The team, led by Dr Brian Hill from the NEI Centre of Excellence in Manufacturing Engineering joined forces with Ryobi Aluminum Casting (UK) Ltd in an effort to reduce maintenance downtime across its Carrickfergus plant which was running at 12% and affecting shipments to customers. The collaboration with Ryobi created tailored maintenance and operations training for 17 robot cell operators resulting in an increased to production time by 63 days. The successful training partnership has brought major benefits to both organisations and 60 Ryobi staff will be further trained over the next two years at the Institutes Robotics Centre. Dr Hill and his team were presented with a Regional Training Award, UK National Training Award and the special award for ‘Colleges in Industry Collaboration Between Industry' which was sponsored by BT.
Upper Bann Institute
Upper Bann Institute's partnership with Express Parcels was awarded a regional National Training award and also the 'The Management and Leadership Network's' sponsored award for best practice in training and its impact upon SMEs. In 2003, Express Parcels wanted to introduce change management strategies to help increase its market share and improve staff performance. The company was facing a number of challenges including driver retention; turnover of manual staff and absenteeism levels on certain shifts above the company average. Training Direct at Upper Bann delivered training for ten middle managers based around the Institute of Leadership & Management ‘Introduction to Management' qualification. Seven managers completed the training and as a result they rarely need to involve senior managers in operational issues. Within four months of completing the training they were able to make a major contribution in, for example, reducing the use of agency staff. Staff turnover, absenteeism and insurance claim levels were also significantly reduced.

The programme was specifically designed to build trainees' confidence and self-esteem, enhance the image of engineering as a career, provide engineering skills training, and develop a good work ethic. Briege Burns has been a senior lecturer in Belfast Institute since 2004 and
has developed Progression Frameworks, strategies and courses to encourage Lifelong Learning. Maura Rea completed Belfast Institute's Read to Succeed Programme and since 2004, she has worked on the Better Reading Partnership at her daughter's secondary school, where she started a creative writing after school club and works in the art department.
