Graduation Celebrations for UBI Jobskills Trainees
The Portadown Campus of UBI celebrated recently an evening of triumphant success for its Jobskills Trainees from both the Banbridge and Portadown campuses. The evening was an excellent celebration of achievement for all students who had successfully completed Jobskills programmes during the 2005/06 academic year. Guest speaker, Mr David Cooper, Director of Training Standards presented many Level 1, 2 and 3 students with certificates, awards and trophies. A number of personal achievement awards and overall achievement awards were also presented and were supplied by local people and representatives from industry such as Porters Body Shop, NACCO Materials Handling, J W Kane Precision Engineering Ltd and Anderson Mechanical Services. Students graduated in a wide range of trades areas including; Bricklaying, Catering & Hospitality, Distributive Operations, Construction Plant Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Electrical Installation, Fabrication & Welding, Heavy Vehicle Repair, Vehicle Fitting, Light Vehicle Body Repair, Land Based Service Engineering, Meat Technology, Mechanical Engineering, Plastering and Wood Occupations.
New Foundation Degree Approved
UBI has been given approval to offer a new course in the Faculty of General and Social Studies. The New Foundation Degree in Early Childhood Studies will run from September 07.
UBI's Lurgan Students Get Their Glad Rags On
Up per Bann Institute's Lurgan Campus held their annual formal recently in Galgorm Manor near Ballymena.
Higher Education Fair at Armagh College
Armagh College held a Higher Education Fair on Wednesday 17 th April 2007 in the Student Village, for all students. In attendance were representatives from Southern Regional College; Belfast Institute of Further and Higher Education; the Open University; Grafton Recruitment; Diamond Recruitment; and N.Ireland Careers Service. Peter Murray, Careers and Guidance Manager at Armagh College said: “The Higher Education Fair is a great opportunity for the students to see what is available. Every student who visited the fair has been offered advice on a range of Higher Education courses available to them, both at Southern Regional College, and many other colleges and universities, including information on entry requirements; how to apply for particular courses; and the potential career prospects of different HE courses. The event has been very busy and has been a great success, and is an important date in the college calendar.” Last year, just under 300 students from Armagh College progressed to Higher Education in colleges and universities throughout Ireland and Great Britain.
Castlereagh Sows Seeds of Good Food Hygiene
Conexus, the business development unit at Castlereagh College have recently run a Food Hygiene course specifically for Woodlawn, a local gardening centre. Thirteen people took the course including full-time and part-time employees, students and international employees. It was run over the course of two evenings. All of the students passed the course and they were delighted with the standard of teaching.
Castlereagh College Students Visit Spain
Castlereagh College Spanish students were on a gourmet trip for a taste of Spain recently. It was the fourth year in a row that the class was offered the trip to Barcelona and it has always been a big success with the students involved and this year was no different. Whilst in Barcelona, the students visited the hot tourist spots such as the Nou Camp, Spain's largest football stadium. Evening entertainment included an opera by Wagner following a morning tour around the opera house, El Liceu and a Spanish guitar recital. Students were also given the opportunity to take a day trip to Torres Winery and have lunch at Monserrat high up in the mountains. The trip to Barcelona offered the Spanish students a chance to practice what they had learned in the classroom. It was also a great opportunity to explore Spanish culture and traditions.

Top Chef ‘Cooks' Up Interest For Unemployed of Fermanagh
Awarding winning Chef Neven Maguire took time out of his busy schedule recently to give a Cookery Demonstration in Fermanagh College at the invitation of the Tourism is Us Project, which is part financed by the EU through the INTERREG IIIA Programme managed by the ICBAN Partnership. This cross-border initiative organised by Project Co-ordinator Ann Maria Curran took place on Tuesday 17 th April. It was aimed at creating interest in training and employment opportunities available locally within the Tourism and Hospitality Industry. This ‘taster' session leads nicely on to the Employment Preparation Programme the college has developed to offer an opportunity to gain sector specific qualifications. This in turn will help equip people with skills and qualifications to enhance their employment prospects and take them a step further to job-readiness. Fermanagh's Tourism is Us Hosts Eco-tourism Seminar
Fermanagh College 's Tourism is Us Project, recently hosted a Cross-border seminar looking at the area of Eco-tourism and Sustainable tourism. The half day training seminar focussed primarily on Eco-tourism in an Irish context, but provided an overview of developments at UK, EU and International Level. Ian Wasson, trainer from The Greenbox facilitated the seminar which was attended by representatives from the Tourism and Hospitality sector and business people from both sides of the border. Ian gave an extensive insight into the practical implementation of quality ‘green' standards and on various training and mentoring programmes developed to help drive the creation of new and innovative Eco-tourism experiences. Shuttering the Doors against Farming Declines at Newry
Farmer Tom Travers received over £11,000 for his new diversification business - Tom Travers Contracts: Concrete Shuttering. Mr Travers, a farmer of dairy cows and beef cattle, operates his new business from his Cabra farm and is already off to a good start with Tom having completed nine jobs to date. Mr Travers attended the ‘Obtaining Alternative Employment; Reskilling & Diversification Programme for Farming Families' which was run in Newry Institute. The programme was funded through the EU Programme for Peace & Reconciliation, awarded to Newry Institute by the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development.

NWI Students Visit Finland
Ten students from the National Diploma in Music Practice at the North West Institute are currently half way through a Leonardo da Vinci Mobility project with their trip to Kajaani , Finland . They are guests of Kajaani Institute, participating in its corresponding music education programme and giving a series of performances locally and on tour. The students formed two bands, Great Northern Metal and Modern Soundtracks, who play original songs. Reports from the students say they are having the experience of a lifetime and making great friendships.

NWI Technology Awareness Event
Students who are currently studying on the North West Institute's Software Professional Academy course are putting on a Technology Awareness Event, to promote computing courses in the college and to raise awareness of the range of careers within the IT industry. The event will be held on 2 May and the main focus of the day is to provide information about a range of IT careers, courses and organisations to careers teachers, ICT teachers and students from the 16 plus age group. Speakers at the event come from Pramerica, West Care, ANIC and ASG and a number of companies will be exhibiting on the day, including Seagate, Singularity, Northbrook and a few other smaller companies from the North West . Northern Ireland Skills Conference - Skills for Innovation
The Department for Employment and Learning's second Annual Skills Conference will take place in Belfast's Waterfront Hall on 15 May. Building on the success of last years conference it will once again provide an opportunity for leading policy makers, educationalists, training providers, and industry representatives to participate in the debate on key issues linking skills development with enhanced productivity and competitiveness of the Northern Ireland economy.

ANIC Conference 2007 will take place from 18-19 June at the Slieve Donard Hotel, Newcastle, Co Down. Details to follow.
ANIC LIFE Awards will take place on Monday 21 May at 6pm in the Lagan Valley Island, Lisburn.
FSB and ANIC Future Students of Business Awards will take place on Friday 8 June in Parliament Buildings, Stormont, Belfast.

BBC Northern Ireland Job Opportunity for Students
BBC Northern Ireland is currently advertising to recruit
Broadcast Technology Assistants.
This role is part of a wider BBC Broadcast Technology Assistant trainee scheme and the BBC is particularly keen to hear from students from FE colleges throughout Northern Ireland who might have the right skills for this exciting opportunity. The closing date for applications is 22 April 2007.
NESTA FameLab
NESTA FameLab is an exciting national competition to find the new voices of UK science and engineering. It is looking for talented people who have the ability to share both their enthusiasm and knowledge with the public. The Northern Ireland heat will take place on 15th April at the Black Box in the Cathedral Quarter of Belfast.
