Countdown to a New Era for FE - ANIC Conference 2007

Full details of the ANIC conference 2007, taking place from 18-19 June at the Slieve Donard Hotel, Newcastle, Co Down
are now available online.


Future Students of Business Awards

The FSB and ANIC Future Students of Business Awards will be held on 8 th June 2007in Parliament Buildings, Stormont.  This annual awards scheme reward and encourages students in FE colleges to be the entrepreneurs of tomorrow.  The aim of the event is to provide financial help to the recipients in the development of business skills, knowledge of the industry and commercial understanding.

Meet the Professionals at Newry

Congratulations to the 2 nd year students on the Foundation Degree Hospitality and Tourism Programmes from Newry Institute of Further and Higher Education who have just completed their finals. At their leaving dinner in the Graduate Restaurant they were presented with additional qualifications that they have achieved over this two year programme: Fidelio , NIOCN Food Preparation and Customer Care . A vast range of jobs have been accepted by the students in this diverse industry while some have decided to continue their studies at Newry on the BA Hons programme or elsewhere. Students were presented with their array of awards by Frances Caherty, Assistant Director.

 
Success for Tomorrow's Managers

Hospitality and Tourism Foundation degree mature students Yinka Idowu and Keely Gorman were delighted to receive the Annual Sean Small Bursary Award at a recent presentation in the Boardroom of Newry Institute. This award was presented by Acting Director, Brian Doran. Course Director Eithne Kinsella congratulated the girls and thanked Janice Gault from Northern Ireland Hotel Federation for their generosity. Both students hope to put their money towards laptops to assist them in their studies. 


Newry Students Awarded for Outstanding Work

Congratulations to Ann Lennon and Pauline Allen who were awarded by Newry Credit Union for their outstanding work on the JEB Certificate in Education Principles and Practice for ICT at Newry Institute. Anne and Pauline were supported throughout their course by Ciara Graham Lecturer and Course co-ordinator for the JEB courses at Newry Institute.



North West Institute to Hold Information Days

North West Institute, Northside Centre, will be holding Information Days on Monday 11 th and Tuesday 12 th June between 10.00am and 2.00pm in the Northside Shopping Mall, Glengalliagh Road , Derry . Staff from the centre will be available on both days to provide guidance and advice to prospective students on the courses which will be available at NWIFHE Northside this September. Copies of the Institute's new full-time and part-time prospectus will be available, and part-time options include GCSEs, ACCESS, Arts & Crafts, Business & Administration, Essential Skills, Hairdressing & Beauty Therapy, Hobby & Special Interest, IT & Computing, Languages, and Music. Moy Park Employees Celebrate ESOL Success

The first group of Moy Park employees to pass their ESOL Entry Level 1 exams were presented with City & Guilds Certificates of Achievement during an informal awards presentation at the factory recently. Noel Millar, Outreach Coordinator, Moy Park and Isabel Russell, UBI ESOL tutor made the presentations on the day. The full-time employees receiving their awards on the day were from a diverse range of countries including Poland , Lithuania , Portugal , East Timor and Brazil . The Moy Park employees have been studying English language for two years and having completed Entry Level 1, are now studying to complete Entry Level 2. They are tutored on site by Upper Bann Institute ESOL tutor Isabel Russell and complete their qualifications alongside their work schedules. Isabel congratulated the ESOL students and emphasised the demand for the provision of ESOL. Upper Bann Institute currently runs four ESOL classes on the Moy Park site to accommodate the growing need for the qualification.


Armagh College Receives IIP Award

Armagh College was formally presented with the prestigious Investors in People (IIP) Award by Sir Reg Empey MLA, the new Minister for Employment and Learning, at the IIP Celebration Event at Hillsborough Castle on Thursday 31 st May. Investors in People, now in its 16 th year, is a business improvement tool that helps organisations to compete and succeed through improved people performance, it is founded on the principle that better people performance makes for better business performance. As the only people quality standard, Investors in People provides a framework for integrating human resources strategy with business strategy. Armagh College is delighted to receive the Prestigious Investor In People (IIP) Award.  The college has a commitment to high quality standards in all aspects of its work, consistently putting measures in place to ensure staff are fully trained to the best of their performance. This Investors in People Award confirms that quality targets are not only met but often exceeded at Armagh College.


Mayor's Reception for Armagh College Achievement

The Mayor of Armagh City and District Council held a reception at Armagh City Council grounds on Tuesday 5 th June, to honour Armagh College 's recent success at the AoC Beacon Awards. Armagh College recently received The Churches AoC Beacon Award in Westminster for its Community Relations Programme.  However, when accepting the award, the College was also unveiled as the winner of this year's President's Award at the AoC Beacon Awards ceremony in Westminster , London .  The College was hand selected from the twenty-three AoC Beacon Award winners by the President of the Association of Colleges, paralympic gold medallist Giles Long, as a shining example of further achievement. Guests from Armagh College , as well as representatives from Community groups in the Armagh area, that have been involved in the community relations project, were in attendance at the reception, to join Mayor William Irwin, Armagh City and District Council, in celebrating Armagh College 's great achievement.


Armagh Medical Secretary Student Receives Top Award

NVQ Level III Medical Secretarial student, Claire Wright, at Armagh College , has received this year's GP Award for Medical Secretaries for her outstanding achievements and progress during her time on the course. The award is presented by the GPs from Armagh General Practices to a student from the NVQ Medical Secretarial Course each year.  As part of this course, all secretaries are placed in hospitals and health centres for one day per week throughout the two-year course.  Claire recently completed her second year work placement in the Obstetrics and Gynaecology Department of Craigavon Area Hospital, where she worked as an Audio Typist.  In her first year of the course she worked in Richhill Health Centre, gaining experience working as a Medical Receptionist.


Belfast Institute Celebrates Success Of Students

Belfast Institute celebrated the success of twelve of its top students at a ‘Celebration of Excellence' awards recently at its Brunswick Street Building. Handpicked from each of departments within the college, students were recognised for their outstanding academic achievements at regional, national and international level. The event celebrated the achievements of students from every walk of life and of all ages. Clive Tanner, aged 86, received an award for his commitment to lifelong learning while Adam Buchanan, aged 22, scooped an award for returning to education and attaining 3 A grades in his A Levels. Adam left school at 16 without completing his GCSEs. Other winners were awarded for World recognition in Marketing, Business and Sport; entrepreneurship and self employment; cultural integration; culinary excellence and technical advancements. Overall, the students were awarded for their commitment and dedication to both their studies and profession. Each of the nine departments within the institute were represented for their excellence including the Department of Computing, Department of General Education, Department of Technology, Department of Hospitality, Leisure and Tourism, Department of Creative and Health Studies, Department of Business and Management, Department of Community Education, Department of Continuing Education and the mallni project.


18 Languages @ Belfast Met – There's Bound to be One for You!

In September 2007 Belfast Metropolitan College will be offering courses in 18 different languages from Arabic to Turkish . In addition, the college is extending its range of French Diplomas to include DALF (Diplôme approfondi de langue française) and Spanish Diplomas to offer DELE Inicial as an evening class.  French DELF B2 / DALF C1 and Spanish DELE Intermedio / Superior preparation courses are ideal for French and Spanish teachers. If you enrol by 6 July 2007, you will benefit from an Early Bird reduction.

 
Top ILM Award for Castlereagh Student

Castlereagh College student David Harbinson has been awarded the ILM Learner of the Year Award from approximately 75,000 eligible learners for his outstanding performance on the ILM Level 5 course. The ILM Awards recognise learners who have achieved outstanding results through innovative development approaches. Effective management and leadership development enables individuals to achieve their potential and organisations to harness talent and meet business objectives. Behind every success there is a story to tell about commitment, personal growth, achievement and hard work.

Bright Sparks at Castlereagh College

Castlereagh College staff have helped to secure 100% success rate again for the Installing and Commissioning Electro-technical Systems 2351-2356 NVQ Level 3 course. This four year course is a Modern Electrical Apprenticeship which aims to equip students with the knowledge, skills and experience required by the Electrical Training Trust (ETT) and national standards.

Guidance - Force for Change

BBC Blast

This free event is being held on 27 th June to 1 st July 2007 in the Custom House Square , Belfast and is aimed at young people aged 13-19 who want to find out more about the media and arts.  It will include drop-in, taster sessions and workshops on everything from dance, music, digital photography, animation, TV and film and much more. 

Delivering on the Reform Agenda

bmf Business Services, in association with BT, Xansa and Deloitte, is organising a seminar examining the major issue of change in NI's public sector.  Open to organisations and individuals.  The seminar is being held on Wednesday 20 th June 2007 in the Stormont Hotel, Belfast . Queen's Women Graduates Scholarship

This scholarship is awarded each year to mature women students on low income, who wish to return to study or continue their studies for a primary degree at Queen's University, Belfast (QUB). Many previous applicants have attended Access Courses at FE colleges. The value of the Scholarship is currently in the range of £200 to £900 and the amount awarded is at the discretion of QWG. Transform your Business Idea

The Transform – Ideas Into Businesses Programme is a one year full-time business incubation programme which is funded by the EU Programme for Peace and Reconciliation and run by Enterprise Ireland and Invest Northern Ireland . It is designed to provide ambitious entrepreneurs, who have an idea for an export focused business, with the necessary business skills, expertise, contacts, networks and facilities to establish successful businesses. It will allow you the time and space to develop your business plan and get your business up and running.


Final Call for Applications for Oxford Summer School Scholarships

Skillsmart Retail and Retail Trust are making a final call for applications for their ten scholarships, worth over £1000, to the prestigious and highly respected British shops and stores association (bssa) ‘Oxford Summer School.' Running from 18-24 August, the programme features a mix of keynote speakers, central presentations, group discussions and focuses on enhancing each delegate's expertise in the management of four key resources:  People, Money, Merchandise and Retail Space.  The attendees will have a unique opportunity to harness valuable personal insight while sharpening their practical retail skills to help maximise their workplace experience and grow as retail leaders.
