Armagh College Advises Scottish College on Best Practice

Dumfries and Galloway College recently spent time at Armagh College on a best practice visit. The main focus of their trip was the implementation of EFQM and balanced scorecards. The Scottish colleagues met with various members of the management team who advised on the processes implemented by Armagh College in light of the recent EFQM, Investors in People and Beacon Award success.


Armagh College to Host Open Day

Armagh College Open Day will take place in the College Library on Thursday 8th March from 9am to 9pm.

 
Belfast Institute Careers Seminar a Great Success

Seventy Careers' Teachers and Officers from across Northern Ireland recently attended a special seminar at the Belfast Institute's Brunswick Street Building . The seminar was organised to give them the opportunity to hear about the vast range of further and higher education courses that will be offered in September 2007 in Belfast Metropolitan College (the merger of Belfast Institute and Castlereagh College ). Mr Brian Turtle , Director Designate of the Belfast Met, took the opportunity to inform people of the merger process, the plans for a New Build in the Titanic Quarter to be opened in 2009 and the enhanced programme offers that are now available on 6 main sites across the city. Mr Trevor Smyth , Deputy Director of Belfast Institute and Hugh Moore from the Curriculum Unit outlined the new programmes of study now available to students while Paul White from the Department of Workforce and Economic Development referred to work being done to support students with work placements and developing their employability/entrepreneurship skills.

Particularly welcome at the event were two members of staff from Invest NI – Kerry Quinn and Judith Miller who detailed the growing number of jobs currently available in Northern Ireland in both the financial and software development sectors. Many of those attending commented on how useful they had found the event as a chance to learn of the plans for Belfast Metropolitan College and the increasing opportunities for the future workforce.

 
Castlereagh College Students Visit Army Camp

The National Certificate/Diploma in Public Services students visited Ballykinler Army Camp during half-term week. During the week, students participated in a wide range of activities including camping, four mile runs, shooting range and swimming. Each student received a certificate for their participation on the programme on the last day and special recognition went to Olivia Godfrey who received a gold medal for “Fittest Female.”


Castlereagh Students Aim to Fly High

Castlereagh College 's First Diploma Travel and Tourism students are currently raising money to fund an educational trip to Manchester City Airport in April. The aim of the one-day trip is to give the students the opportunity to explore and experience the day-to-day operational activities at a major international airport. The students will be given a tour of the airport which will include the check-in areas, the baggage hold and other key operational functions within the airport. They will also attend a presentation which will give them more detailed information on the daily running of the airport. To raise money for their trip, the Travel and Tourism students are running activities which include a sponsored leg wax and a Easter basket raffle.

 
Newry Boasts Best Junior Chef in Ireland              

Newry Institute's School of Hospitality and Tourism has the 'Best Junior Chef in Ireland .' Sinead Boyle is a 2nd year NVQ Level 2 Professional Cookery student and she was awarded this title after competing in the three day Catex Salon Culinaire in Dublin which attract entries from across Ireland and the UK. Sinead also won a Gold Medal and Best in Class in the Junior Chicken competition. She is a former pupil of St. Joseph 's, Crossmaglen and works in Garvey's Restaurant. The 11 students won a total of 18 Medals and Awards - 2 Golds, 3 Silvers, 5 Bronze, 4 Cert of Merit, 4 Best in Class. The Newry Culinary Team lead by Patricia McClean and Lynette McMath clearly cleaned the boards in Dublin.


Newry Institute Helps Launch Innovative Health Programme

Representatives from Newry and Mourne Health & Social Services Trust, The Widening Participation Unit and Newry Institute launched this innovative work based learning program recently at Daisy Hill Hospital. The training program is aligned to the Social Care Induction Standards, National Occupational Standards, Essential Skills Standards and internal NHS competency frameworks. A total of 18 frontline staff including Trustcare workers catering, housekeeping and portering will undertake a vocationally related qualification (VRQ) at level 2 that is built around the six core competencies of the NHS Knowledge & Skills Framework (KSF).


Colleges Keep Business Women Going

Newry Institute played host recently to the first of three workshops as part of the EDGE Programme. This initiative is run in partnership between Newry Institute, Upper Bann Institute and Armagh College . It aims to encourage and empower women to become more entrepreneurial and to develop their management skills and capabilities. The first workshop was entitled “Keeping It Going” and was facilitated by local female entrepreneur Marie McStay of “Insight Out Training”. Marie works extensively in education, training, radio and the creative arts. She specialises in the field of capacity and confidence building and works within organisations dedicated to developing the potential of staff. There were over 60 women present at the workshop from the Newry, Armagh, Craigavon and Banbridge areas


North West Institute's Educational Cultural Project at the Ready

Students from North West Institute are preparing to take part in an exciting cultural exchange project with their counterparts in Korsor , Denmark . The project will provide the students, all of whom have special needs / learning difficulties and disabilities, with an opportunity to experience educational approaches used in a different cultural setting, and it is aimed at boosting vocational mobility, personal development and employability. The students will get the chance to participate in a range of educational and learning experiences relating to areas of their course of study, such as communications, information technology, arts and business. The project will consolidate an already productive relationship between the Institute and Korsor Production School in Denmark . The monitoring and evaluation of the student experiences will be undertaken by NWIFHE, Korsor, and the students themselves, and the programme is funded by Leonardo Da Vinci European Training for the United Kingdom .


North West Institute Students to Star in "I AM"

Performing Arts students from North West Institute are busy with final preparations for their latest production - I Am . The show is destined to have audiences intrigued, delighted and moved by intimate, highly personal one-man and one-woman performances. Written and performed by 2 nd year students from the National Diploma in Performing Arts course, these detailed vignettes are guaranteed to leave those in attendance wanting more. The show will take place in the Institute's City Factory Theatre on Thursday 8th March 2007 at 7.00pm for one night only, and tickets are available at the door. Tickets are priced at £4.00 and £3.00 (conc.)

ANIC Forthcoming Events 2007

ANIC Conference 2007 will take place from 18-19 June at the Slieve Donard Hotel, Newcastle, Co Down. Details to follow.

ANIC LIFE Awards will take place on Monday 21 May at 6pm in the Lagan Valley Island, Lisburn.

FSB and ANIC Future Students of Business Awards will take place on Friday 8 June in Parliament Buildings, Stormont, Belfast.

RSCni Annual Conference

RSCni's Annual Conference, on Wednesday 21st March at East Tyrone College , will address a range of issues that will assist colleges in the strategic development of e-learning. The 3 keynotes and 8 workshops will allow staff from many roles in colleges to contribute to the production of their colleges e-Learning Strategy, from developing a vision of where technology can help achieve college objectives to shared experiences of colleagues from N Ireland and UK colleges.

LSDA NI Annual Conference

This year's LSDA Annual Conference will take place on Tuesday 24 April 2007 from 9.00 am – 4.15 pm at the Galgorm Manor, Ballymena. The conference is entitled Delivering Public Value and will facilitate discussion framework to help organisations deliver a performance that accommodates client satisfaction and social outcomes. Corporate Governance and Risk Management Seminar

The seminar, organized by BMF, takes place in the Culloden Hotel, Belfast on Thursday 29th March 2007 and is aimed at professionals who have responsibility for exercising governance and risk management in any capacity. BBC Northern Ireland Job Opportunity for Students

BBC Northern Ireland is currently advertising to recruit Broadcast Technology Assistants. This role is part of a wider BBC Broadcast Technology Assistant trainee scheme and the BBC is particularly keen to hear from students from FE colleges throughout Northern Ireland who might have the right skills for this exciting opportunity. The closing date for applications is 22 April 2007.


BBC Big Yellow Bus Timetable

The BBC Bus will be at the following locations during March 2007.  The Bus will be open from 11am to 3pm unless otherwise stated.

Saturday 3rd - Newtownstewart - Millenium Centre. Open from 12pm until 4pm delivering Radio production and Digital Photography workshops.
Tuesday 6th  - Newry - Storyfinders Project The bus is heading to Newry to deliver their first batch of training for the members.  Please click on the following link www.storyfinders.co.uk for more information.
Wednesday 7th and Thursday 8th - East Tyrone College of Further and Higher Education in Cookstown to deliver Radio Production and Basic Computing workshops for various groups based in the town.
Saturday 10th  - Healthy Minds event - Lakeland Youth Centre, Enniskillen.  12pm until 4pm - John Daly will be broadcasting live from the event.
Wednesday 14th  - Healthy Minds event - Gasyard Healthy Living Centre, L'Derry. Open from 2pm until 6pm. Mark Patterson's Radio Foyle show will be coming live from the event from 3 to 5pm. 
Thursday 15th  - Holywell Hospital In conjunction with the Healthy Minds campaign the Bus is heading up to Holywell Hospital to deliver workshops in Digital Photography. The visit will also coincide with an Art exhibition at the hospital.
Friday 16th  - Healthy Minds event - St Patrick's Hall, Strabane.  The bus will be open to all between 12pm and 4pm.  Hugo Duncan will be doing a live broadcast between 1.30 and 3pm. 
Tuesday 20th - Newry - Storyfinders Project.  Open from 11am until 3pm.
Wednesday 21st  - Healthy Minds event - North East Institute, Antrim campus.  The bus will be open to all between 2pm and 6pm. Check out the healthy food demonstration and join Radio Ulster's Alan Simpson live at the event from 3 to 5pm 
Thursday 22nd  - School Report Day - Londonderry.  
Saturday 24th  - Healthy Minds event - Patrick St Campus, Newry Institute.  The bus will be open to all between 9am and 1pm. Radio Ulster 's John Toal will host the popular Saturday Magazine show from the event from 10 until 11am.
Wednesday 28th  - Aslan Centre, Knocknagoney.  Workshops in Digital Photography. Members of the trust from all over Northern Ireland will be coming along on the day to find out how to get the best out of their digital cameras and how to manipulate their images on the computer! The bus will be open to all between 10pm and 3pm.
Friday 30th  - Healthy Minds event - Holywood Town Hall.  The bus will be open to all between 12pm and 4pm.  Hugo Duncan will be there too, broadcasting live from the event from 1.30 – 3pm
