World Gold Winning Student at Newry Institute
Newry Institute is delighted to congratulate those students who won an award from Britain 's most prestigious Secretarial examining body: the London Chamber of Commerce. Francis Henry, this year's Gold World Award winner and Gillian Hughes, who won the World Silver Medallion, undertook the Private Secretary's Diploma within the Institute. The awards recognised the students' achievements in Business Administration and Text Production respectively.
Newry Gives Women the 'Edge'
Newry Institute is pleased to announce an exciting new entrepreneurial/management programme for women. edge is a joint initiative between Newry Institute, Upper Bann Institute and Armagh College and is funded through the Northern Ireland Programme for Building Sustainable Prosperity.
‘Flexi' Learning At Newry Institute
Newry Institute is now offering new, innovative ‘flexi' courses. Flexi courses offer you more choice in where and when you do your learning and reduced attendance requirements at the Institute.

NDAI Students Highly Commended at CIPD Awards
At a recent awards ceremony, students from the Certificate in Personnel Practice at North Down and Ards Institute received recognition for their high level of achievement on the course.
Euro Health and Safety Week Visit to North West Institute
Derry City Council's Environmental Health Officer Eamon Toner visited North West Institute this week to promote European Health & Safety Week, a week-long series of events aimed at promoting the protection of young people in the workplace.
North West Institute launch MasterChef Events
Over the next few months, the Hospitality and Catering Section of North West Institute will hold a series of cuisine demonstrations by Master Chefs covering a range of produce.
Pretty in Pink at Omagh College
Omagh College NVQ Level 2 & 3 Beauty Therapy students had a day of ‘pink' madness on Tuesday 24th October to raise money for Breast Cancer Research. The students went all out in their pink attire grabbing lots of attention and cash as they bounced through the corridors collecting money throughout the day.
Omagh College to Host CCEA Art Exhibition
Omagh College will host the CCEA Art Exhibition for the second year running from Monday 20th November to Friday 1st December. This exhibition displays GCSE and A-Level art work from students in the west. The event is designed to be a ‘celebration of art', and will undoubtedly contain many high quality creations. Omagh Computer Games Students Attend Masterclass
Omagh College National Diploma in Computer Games students took part in a recent Computer Masterclass event in the Media Studio at Catalyst Arts in Belfast . This event was sponsored by Belfast City Council and produced by Channel 4. During the event, students had an opportunity to listen to and talk with many high profile industry professionals, such as Gina Jackson (Head of Business Development for New Media at Eidos, publishers of Tomb Raider, Hitman and Commandos), Risa Cohen (Adjunct Professor for 3D & Videogames production at the University of Paris), and Paul McLaughlin (Head of Art for Lionhead Studios in the UK).

Pre-Access Course Opens Doors at Upper Bann
The Pre-Access Programme has been designed by Upper Bann Institute as a stepping stone to its Access Programme. The course runs for a total of 18 weeks – 3 hours per week and provides instruction in a diverse range of skills including: ICT Development, Irish History, Psychology and English Literature. Each unit has been specifically designed to act as a ‘taster module' from those that are covered in the two year part time Access Diploma in Foundation Studies, which when completed is equivalent to A Level standard and provides entry to University. This course is offered at various UBI campuses and outcentres. Upper Bann Institute will be holding an open morning for anyone who is interested in finding out more about its Pre-Access course and how this can ease them back into education. This will be held on Thursday 9 November between 10 - 11am at their Portadown campus. Agreement Signed Between Armagh and Cumbernauld College
An agreement has been signed this week between Armagh College and Cumbernauld College, Scotland, with Mr Jack McConnell, Scottish First Minister witnessing the signing of the partnership. The partnership agreement will provide learners with the opportunity of exchanges both nationally and internationally in order to enrich their experience while at both colleges. The agreement is the final link in the chain of work that has been underway for two years and proves how dynamic and forward thinking both FE colleges have become. It is an opportunity for both colleges to share best practice to the benefit of staff and learners.
Armagh College Staff Learn To Moodle
Armagh College staff, as part of staff development, were taught how to Moodle. Moodle is a free, open source software package designed using sound pedagogical principles, to help educators create effective online learning communities. There are over 130,000 registered users, speaking over 75 languages in over 160 countries. Armagh College has installed Moodle on its servers to enhance the delivery of ILT in the classroom. Moodle @ Armagh College can transform the way you teach and the ways in which your students learn.
Mindmapping In Armagh College
Armagh College staff participated in a course which aimed to assist them to become fully conversant with the theory of MindMapping and its application in the classroom. The objectives were that on completion of the course the staff should be able to Understand the theory that lies behind MindMapping, the use of MindMapping and its relationship to increased re-call by students, be able to use mindmaps to increase attention by students during lecture activities, to develop group work by students and to review learning activities.
Belfast Students Top of the Class
Students Aoife Cunningham and Bronagh Doherty from the Belfast Institute's Department of Continuing Education have achieved ‘A' Grades in the Diploma in Childcare and Education. To put this into context, in 2005/06 there were 5,782 candidates from 347 centres across the United Kingdom, when only ten of them got ‘A' Grades. Well done Aoife and Bronagh, and congratulations also to the tutors in the Centre for Childhood Studies and Healthcare at the Institute.
Belfast Institute Achieves Matrix Standard
Belfast Institute's Information Advice and Guidance Centre within the Department of Information and Student has achieved the Matrix Standard following a rigorous assessment process. The assessor, John Saunders, was extremely complimentary with regard to the quality and skill of the staff, the quality of information advice and guidance which is on offer to students, the strength of partnership, the use of IT, the support on offer to the team, linkages to the Students Union, linkages with the Centre for Inclusive Learning and the work which was conducted by the team of managers who participated in the CEL project in 2005. He also made reference to the strength of their evaluation processes and recognised the significant and unique contribution of the Centre for Research in this area.
Minister Launches ‘Homework Rules' Website at Belfast Institute
The Minister for the Department for Employment and Learning, Maria Eagle MP, recently launched the innovative ‘Homework Rules' project at the Belfast Institute. ‘Homework Rules' is an internet site that has been developed by ‘mallni', a specialised unit within the Belfast Institute that develops, writes, designs, and produces rich media Broadband content, and which is dedicated to the regeneration of the creative sector in Northern Ireland. The launch of the site is part of the Government's Renewing Communities drive and has been developed as a direct result of parents' request for assistance with their children's mathematics homework. Research has identified that the project should primarily target parents living within the Greater Shankill wards of Belfast and therefore ‘Homework Rules' will be piloted initially in this area.
Charity Begins at East Tyrone
East Tyrone College 's restaurant Etcetera recently held a coffee morning to raise money for Marie Curie Cancer Care. The event was very successful with a total sum of £865 raised. The Catering and Hospitality department would like to thank everyone who supported the charity coffee morning by coming along and enjoying the hospitality provided or who just dropped in to make donations. Well done to the level 2 & 3 professional cookery students and hospitality supervision students and staff who provided the food and served the customers so professionally.
East Tyrone Student a Cut Above the Rest Leah Campbell, a second year hairdressing student in the college has come first in a hairdressing competition held in the Ashbourne Hotel, Lurgan on Monday 23rd October. Leah won the student blow-dry section of the competition which was organised by ITALY hair products and was presented with a pair of scissors worth £200 and a trophy in recognition of her success. Leah was entered in to the competition through her work placement salon, 'SuZi Kutz' in Coalisland where she attends two days per week as part of the Hairdressing programme.
East Tyrone College Delivers First Commercial Prototype
The first of a series of commercial prototypes has just been delivered by staff working within the innovation centre and engineering department at East Tyrone College . The project involved the development of a scaled model for a new and highly innovative piece of agricultural machinery which has been designed by a local Cookstown company.

National Literacy Conference - Creating Writers
St. Mary's University College, Belfast will be holding its second national literacy conference on Friday 1st December 2006. This exciting event is entitled 'Creating Writers'. The programme includes a range of speakers including Eve Bearne, Cambridge Univeristy; Carlo Gebler, award-winning author, film maker, producer; Trinka Messinheimer, Bowling Green State University , Ohio , USA ; David Park, renowned author. LSDA NI Essential Skills Conference
LSDA NI will be holding a conference entitled Promoting Active Learning: a development day for ES Numeracy & Maths practitioners on Friday 17 November 2006 from 9.45am - 4 pm at the Park Avenue Hotel, Belfast. The main speaker will be Dr Malcolm Swan from the University of Nottingham.
NIACE Conference in Northern Ireland
NIACE will be holding a one day event on adult pre-entry curriculum framework training for literacy and numeracy. Building on the success of the one-day adult pre-entry Curriculum Framework courses delivered so far during 2006 and in response to continued demand, NIACE is pleased to notify that the offer of training is now being extended to Northern Ireland and will take place in Belfast 30 January 2007. The event aims to assist those whose teaching involves supporting learners at pre-entry level with their communication, literacy and numeracy skills in any post-16 context. Network Publishing Northern Ireland Conference
The Network Publishing Northern Ireland Conference will take place on 29 November 2006 at the Comfort Hotel, Antrim from 10.00am to 3.30pm. This free event will enable you to find out more about flexible learning as a training solution for Northern Ireland . There will also be a chance to meet with college practitioners who are currently delivering Network Publishing programmes, as well as representatives from CCEA and NCFE. The event will provide information on funding and delivery of flexible learning programmes, along with presentations from ANIC about employers' views and flexible learning from an FE sector perspective. There will also be an opportunity to view a wide range of flexible learning materials and to participate in discussion regarding the current need to up-skill the workforce within Northern Ireland. Enterprise Week 2006
Enterprise Week 2006 will run from 13th -19th November. This is an annual UK-wide week of activities inspiring people in their teens and twenties to be enterprising and to turn ideas into something real.

Call for Grundtvig 3 Professional Development Proposals
The British Council is calling for applications, particularly from Northern Ireland, for Grundtvig 3 opportunities (Professional Development). The programme offers a grant of up to 1,500 Euro to adult educators to go on professional development courses, conferences, work shadowing/study visits of between two days and four weeks in duration. This grant generally covers all the costs involved (travel, subsistence, course fee – where relevant – preparation costs, etc). The average length of activity chosen tends to be five-six days. Study Visits Opportunity with the British Council
British Council is looking for applicants to take part in the CEDEFOP Study Visits programme in the first half of 2007. There are 31 visits to choose from focusing on various vocational education and training topics including “Developing entrepreneurship among young people”, “Competence development of older workers” and “Needs of low-skilled and disadvantaged groups”. Cinemagic Young Filmmaker 2006
Have You Made A Short Film? Would You Like To See Your Film Screened In The Cinema? Cinemagic is looking for imaginative and original films made by young people to be screened as part of CINEMAGIC YOUNG FILMMAKER 2006 in association with First Light . The films can be about anything at all fact or fiction, comedy or drama, news programme or documentary. A prize will be awarded for best film - the winning entry will be screened during next year's CINEMAGIC WORLD SCREEN FESTIVAL FOR YOUNG PEOPLE in December 07. The competition is open to anyone aged 25 and under from the UK and Ireland . Simply send a VHS or DVD of your film with details of cast and crew and a short synopsis by FRIDAY 3rd November 2006 . Films should be no longer than 20 minutes. Entries should be sent to CINEMAGIC YOUNG FILMMAKER 2006, Cinemagic, 49 Botanic Avenue , Belfast BT7 1JL.
