Dame Mary Peters Visits UBI
Dame Mary Peters visited Upper Bann Institute's Lurgan Campus recently for a special photography session with HND Photography student Andrea Brown. As part of her final major project for the HND Photography course, Andrea was tasked with producing a large piece of work to submit to achieve her final qualification. Andrea decided upon ‘celebrity photography' as her chosen subject area and contacted Dame Mary Peters about the possibility of being the celebrity in question. Mary herself was keen to lend Andrea a hand when she learnt of Andrea's past. Andrea lost her father, an RUC Officer, at the age of 12 and six years later at the age of 18, Andrea herself was blown up in a blast bomb in Lisburn. This caused severe spinal injuries leaving Andrea as registered disabled and with problems walking and with day to day life in general. Both these major incidents caused a halt in Andrea's education. Although she went on to have daughter Jade, who is now 11, having no qualifications and little mobility, Andrea was unable to find work that would suit her disabilities. Having always had an interest in photography Andrea decided to apply for the HND Photography course in UBI and now at the end of the two year course, Andrea has many plans for the future. She has already applied for the Honours Degree in Creative Imaging at Upper Bann Institute and her ultimate goal is to start her own business in Portrait and Wedding Photography. Andrea's final piece of work entitled “The Lady behind the Hero” featuring Dame Mary Peters, will be available for view at the HND Photography end of year show at the Millennium Court in Portadown. Opening night is 30 th May and the exhibition will run until 29th June.
